In this article we explain what superficial peels and TCA peels are and what the benefits for your skin can be.
The peels of CHRIS
A peel is designed to remove dead skin cells and reveal new, fresh skin. But not every peel is the same. At CHRIS we offer superficial peels and go a step further with our medium peels. Both peels work differently and have a different effect. A superficial peel is perfect for refreshing the skin and countering issues such as sun damage and early signs of skin ageing. A medium peel, on the other hand, is used to tackle skin concerns very specifically, including smoker’s skin, hyperpigmentation, melasma or acne scars. Both our superficial and medium peels are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and thinning skin.
Our superficial peels
A superficial peel owes its name to the depth of skin penetration: this peel reaches the top – superficial – layer of the skin (the epidermis). Because the peel does not penetrate very deeply, it is fairly mild. For our superficial Easy Droxy Peel we use five different fruit acids: salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid and kojic acid. The combination of these skin-friendly acids makes this superficial peel an ideal refreshing treatment. After the peel you look fresher and more radiant. The skin is firmer, less dull and dry, and after a superficial peel you also have a healthy complexion. And the best part: the Easy Droxy Peel does not cause you to flake. There is no so-called downtime. This makes a superficial peel perfect for when you have a party or an important appointment coming up. In that case, schedule your superficial peel a few days before the event. Even though a superficial peel is fairly mild, we still recommend applying a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily for up to two weeks after the treatment. Our medium peels
Do you want to actively work on skin renewal and skin rejuvenation? Or do you want to tackle a skin concern very specifically? Then a medium TCA peel is more effective. For a TCA peel we use trichloroacetic acid, a substance that can penetrate even deeper into the skin than fruit acids. This gives a medium peel a stronger exfoliating effect. Unlike a superficial peel, a medium peel does involve some downtime: you will flake. The flaking is a reaction of the skin and the sign that genuine skin improvement is taking place. After five to seven days you see the first results of a medium peel: brighter, thicker, smoother, younger skin, fewer enlarged pores, fewer wrinkles and a healthy glow. A medium peel can visually shave ten years off your age; one of the reasons a TCA peel is so enormously popular. How exactly does a peel work?
After your skin has been thoroughly cleansed, the acid-based emulsion is applied to the skin. We work in layers, until the desired depth is reached. With a TCA peel, the trichloroacetic acid triggers an inflammatory process in the skin, causing the ‘old’ skin to be shed. During the treatment the skin becomes red and stings, but our Easy TCA Pain Control has a pain-relieving effect, which makes the treatment manageable. After the peel we apply a soothing mask that you leave on all day. Only the next day may you cleanse and care for your skin again. Of course, we advise you extensively about this after the treatment.
